Volunteers in Service Can Improve Health and Wellness

It’s true you can lower your stress, boost your creativity, improve your work performance, and get a better night’s sleep all from just going outside.  Yes, just walk outside – it’s lovely!  Being outside connects us in a way that makes us feel like we are winning in life.  If that sounds like a good excuse to head out for some fresh air, then by all means, go have some fun!

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation offers many wonderful volunteer opportunities, many of which can also help improve overall health and wellness.  Volunteer positions range from assisting in a community center to patrolling a trail on foot, by horse or on a mountain bike.  From improving your positive emotions to breathing fresh air, adding a little movement to your daily life has many benefits, not to mention the joy of doing good..

People of all ages can also help about by engaging in environmental stewardship - planting trees,  removing invasive plant species, or picking up trash and debris around a park.  Simply giving a hand can set the bar for better personal and community health.
