Mindfulness usually begins as an individual practice, but when the practice of mindfulness is shared between members of a group, each member is likely to receive additional benefits.  When people come together to work towards a common goal or project, they can experience strengthened relationships and gain a better understanding of the power of interconnectedness.  A Reason to Survive (ARTS) understands the value of interconnectedness to support creative and effective community building.

On October 20, 2018, ARTS hosted a community beautification project at the Paradise Creek Gathering Place, an entry point to Kimball Park in National City. The artistic improvement project involved ARTS’ members, artists and volunteers who participated in arts and crafts, sign making, gardening, rock painting, food and more. 

Additionally, ARTS helped National City win an award for the makeover of a small community store. The renovation brought together volunteers of all ages to help install a mural, a succulent wall, planters that feature mosaic art and a trellis shade structure. Volunteers also gave the exterior of the building a fresh coat of paint.

Founded in 2001, ARTS partners with Sweetwater schools and the San Diego Symphony, among other groups, to provide internships and opportunities for youth to overcome obstacles and provide the skills needed for positive change. Offering more opportunities for communities to share their talents through engaging activities will foster an environment of mindfulness and togetherness.
