Age-Friendly Communities Focus of Aging Summit 2016

Join Dick Van Dyke at the Aging Summit 2016: Age Well San Diego conference on June 15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Town & Country Convention Center. Over the course of many decades, the popular entertainer sang and danced his way into the hearts of millions of Americans and now, at 90, he has important advice on remaining vital well into old age. Mr. Van Dyke will be sharing his personal philosophy and tidbits from his book “Keep Moving and Other Tips and Truths About Aging” during his keynote address which will also be telecast to the event’s companion site in North County at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

The Summit will focus on “Age-Friendly Communities,” a concept first envisioned by the World Health Organization and AARP. An Age-Friendly Community is one in which the old as well as the young are supported to live healthy, active and socially connected lives. These communities have the necessary infrastructure, organizations, programs and community spirit to help older adults and persons with disabilities maintain the greatest level of independence possible and remain in their own homes, when feasible.

Joining Dick Van Dyke will be speakers and workshop facilitators who will be discussing different aspects of Age-Friendly Communities including housing, transportation, civic engagement and dementia-friendly community design. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit dozens of resource tables and enjoy a complimentary lunch.

The Summit will kick-off a multiyear effort on the part of the County of San Diego to achieve “Age-Friendly Community” designation from AARP. The journey to designation requires an extensive public participation and needs assessment process. At the Summit, participants will be able to share their opinions on priority areas they believe the County and community partners should focus on to build a community that is a better place in which to live for people of all ages. Opportunities to continue the work to achieve the Age-Friendly vision will also be shared.
