Project Concern International, CDC ALCANCE’s, mission is to increase clinical and community linkages for chronic disease prevention among Latina women in City Heights, Sherman Heights, Logan Heights, and National City. As of June 2016, Project ALCANCE successfully trained 161 Community Health Workers through their Community Health Worker Leadership Academy on chronic disease prevention and leadership skills.  These program participants implemented outreach activities to provide education, awareness, and referrals by utilizing the Referral Pathway Tools. As of June 2016, Project ALCANCE generated 1,023 referrals to La Maestra Community Clinic, Mid-City Community Clinic, Operation Samahan, Family Health Centers of San Diego, American Diabetes Association, American Stroke Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and American Heart Association. 

Project ALCANCE staff continues to recruit women for the leadership academy and continue to provide presentations to organizations and community members on prevention of the four leading chronic diseases; cancer, diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Project Concern International’s women’s group “Mujeres Rumbo al Exito” (Women toward Success), has been meeting in City Heights weekly for the past five months. The women began taking life skills classes such as computer courses, credit management, financial literacy, goal setting, etc.  The group has since blossomed into a solid and safe space where women can share and support one another. The sessions have allowed women to have better understanding of themselves, reflect on their personal journeys, and engage in an empowerment process. Project Concern International offers a depression prevention program as well as a well-being promotion program called HEAL, which provides tools for mental health for the women and their families.
