Partnership Drives Opportunities for Girls in San Diego County

Alison Aragon, Director of Development and Communications

Girls in grades 5-12 have a safe space to explore career pathways, engage in fun workshops and field trips, and learn effective communications skills thanks to the collaboration between Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego and Girls, Inc of San Diego County.

“This partnership with Girls, Inc. has been one of our most meaningful partnerships to date and has made Girls Mentoring Groups at Pro Kids a possibility," shared Alison Aragon with Pro Kids. "It is only through the partnership with Girls, Inc. that we can offer this weekly mentoring programming to over 50 Pro Kids girls throughout San Diego County."

Girls, Inc. of San Diego County is staffed by a single employee, Rosa Alvarado and the organization’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. This blends well with Pro Kids’ mission to challenge underserved youth to excel by promoting character development, life skills and values through education and the game of golf.

Sara, a student in the Girls Mentoring Program, shares:

“The girls mentoring group helps me express my true feelings and gives me an opportunity to get advice from a leader I trust and other girls my age can give me positive feedback without feeling judged.”

Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego is extremely thankful for Rosa, and to our staff member Twannia Baker, Program Manager in Oceanside for creating such a strong partnership with Girls, Inc. and her group of middle and high schoolers over the past two years. Thanks to the leadership of Twannia and Rosa, our City Heights location also began a Girls, Inc. mentoring group this past school year with the help of Pro Kids staff member Christine Duggan. Many of the girls in the City Heights group are without a parent and looking for mentors who can help guide them during the tumultuous and transformative middle and high school years.

Pro Kids promises to never turn away a youth from membership because of a financial barrier. Seventy percent of our members qualify for fee waivers so students can access our program (regularly $250 for the year) at no cost to their families. At Pro Kids, it’s bigger than golf, it is building lasting support systems for kids at a young age to set them on the course of opportunity towards the future of their dreams. We are a hub for the community that gives kids the opportunity to discover who they want to be.
