The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center celebrated the one year anniversary of their newest adult day center called Town Square® in the City of Chula Vista. Town Square® is a first-of-its-kind, immersive 1950’s reminiscence therapy-focused environment that provides a purpose-filled experience for their participants and much-needed respite for their family caregivers. Nearly seventy participants with dementia are enrolled.
Reminiscence therapy is a treatment that uses all the senses — sight, touch, taste, smell and sound — to help individuals with dementia remember events, people and places from their past lives. As part of the therapy, care partners may use objects in various activities to help individuals with recall of memories.
“Town Square® is like Disneyland for seniors!” “I cannot tell you how thankful and pleased we are!! It has literally been life changing having her at Town Square®!” “My dad spent some time there this week and he seemed so much more alive!” “We are so grateful for the kindness, support and compassion you have shown our family as we move further into our journey with Alzheimer’s!” – Family members of participants attending Town Square®.
The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center offers two alternative day center locations in Encinitas and Hillcrest, weekly caregiver support groups, professional dementia care education, memory cafés and volunteer opportunities.
