COUNTY PROBATION OPENS COMMUNITY OFFICE IN NORTH PARK
On May 3, 2022, the San Diego County Probation Department celebrated the opening of a new Community Support Office in North Park. Chief Probation Officer Tamika Nelson told a crowd of more than 50, the people who work in the new building are committed to one mission: protecting public safety by coaching clients to restore their lives, families, and the communities they live in. County Probation wants to provide services to clients while balancing support and accountability.
The new office on Ohio Street was built with input from the community and support from neighbors. The building includes rehabilitative services, a space for community meetings, a demonstration kitchen to teach cooking skills, and a food pantry. Two art pieces are visible from the entrance. “Sunflower” (to the right) and “Moonflower”.
The paintings reflect the values fundamental to restorative justice: community, positive reinforcement, empowerment and inclusivity. The artist, Perry Vasquez, and his family were there to celebrate their unveiling.

COUNTY FIRE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH MT. LAGUNA FIRE STATION
On May 4, 2022, County Fire, CAL FIRE and the community of Mt. Laguna celebrated the completion of the County’s highest elevation fire station, sitting at about 6,000 feet.
The building is shared with County Department of Public Works crews, who are responsible for maintaining roads, including plowing snow or clearing debris following storms.
Station 49 has 5,000 feet of floor space including the area for two fire trucks. It also includes sleeping quarters for six firefighters, a living area, kitchen, office space and gym. There is also a second story balcony so firefighters can enjoy the outdoor environment. The station was built using fire-resistive materials as it is in a high wildfire area.
The site also has very specific lighting systems to maintain the light pollution standards of the International Dark-Sky Association, so it does not impede the research performed at the Mt. Laguna Observatory near the station.
