Chinese Community Donates Personal Protective Equipment to Rady Children’s Hospital

On Tuesday, April 14, a group of San Diego Chinese community
organizations donated nearly 13,800 individual pieces of personal
protective equipment (PPE) to Rady Children’s Hospital in an effort to
ensure our healthcare workers remain healthy during their response to
the COVID-19 pandemic.
The donating organizations include the San Diego Chinese American Association, the Spare Personal Protection Equipment Donation Wechat Group, IVYMAX, the American Chinese Culture and Education Foundation, the American Hunanese Association, and the Xingjian Dance Studio. This tremendous collective contribution follows 170,000 thousand total PPE donations made throughout the past several weeks from the San Diego Chinese community to local essential workers.
It is these acts of solidarity and good will that remain at the very core of San Diego’s mission to ‘flatten the curve’.

Local Resident Donates Hand-Made Masks to Support Domestic Violence Survivors

Donating Time and Skills to Protect Others
Unfortunately, domestic violence doesn’t stop during COVID-19 pandemic. At Center for Community Solutions, their three short-term and long-term shelters are operating at full capacity to ensure survivors have a safe space to escape their trauma.
Recently, Center for Community Solutions received a donation of 25 handmade face masks from community supporter Karin Eastham, who supplied the masks at a time when they were desperately needed to continue safe operations. These lovingly-crafted masks were distributed to the residential staff and the survivors and families currently staying at their shelters.
At Center for Community Solutions, the work doesn’t stop. They operate a free, confidential, bilingual crisis hotline that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Individuals living in San Diego County who may be at risk for violence or in need of support can reach out to (888)-385-4657 to speak directly with a caring advocate.

San Diego Community Answers Call to Support Nurses Aboard the USNS Mercy

Volunteers make a difference for nurses aboard USNS Mercy
Last week, Vets’ Community Connections learned that the Navy Medical Center San Diego Nurses Association was looking for assistance providing masks for nurses aboard the USNS Mercy, a hospital ship who's homeport is in San Diego. They had a goal of collecting 160 masks.
By the end of the week, Vets’ Community Connections volunteers had collected and delivered 947 masks! All of which, we have been assured, will be put to great use!
The San Diego community came together, spread the word, got their sewing machines and needle and thread out, and made a huge difference in the lives of the nurses aboard the USNS Mercy.
