Heather Diamond, Business Dev & Community Relations Manager, San Diego County Credit Union
San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of Southern California’s largest credit unions, is proud to host weekly financial wellness webinars and offer needed financial education resources through its extensive financial wellness program. When the COVID-19 pandemic prevented SDCCU from hosting its in-person Financial Wellness Wednesdays presentations in spring of 2020, SDCCU mobilized quickly to deliver financial wellness webinars that viewers could attend from the comfort and safety of their own homes.
The webinars are presented on a diverse range of topics, including budgeting, understanding credit, buying a first home, planning for retirement, teaching teens about money and more! They are complemented with additional resources, such as regular blogs, social media posts and press releases alerting the public of coronavirus scams and other information relevant to financial health.
According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 71 percent of households face difficulty saving because of expenses they didn’t plan for and in 2020, research showed that nearly half of Americans were experiencing financial pain as a result of closures of non-essential businesses and job losses during pandemic. SDCCU aims to change these statistics through financial education.
With more than two dozen different financial wellness webinar topics that rotate weekly, there are presentations for every stage of life. Each webinar provides tips, examples, and resources for the attendees to help set them on the path to financial success. SDCCU also hosts special webinars presented by industry experts on topics such as home buying, auto buying, cyber security, fraud awareness and investments.
The SDCCU Biz Kid$ program teaches children about money and business, helping to lay the foundation early on for a successful financial future. The program was launched in 2015 in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and Live Well San Diego to deliver the SDCCU Biz Kid$ program to educators and the community. Biz Kid$ is a financial literacy initiative that teaches kids and teens how to use credit wisely and the importance of saving, budgeting, investing, and giving back to their communities. Each episode is accompanied with lesson plans and worksheets that map to local, state, and national standards for financial literacy.
