County Board of Supervisors’s Chairman, Bill Horn, and County Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nick Yphantides celebrated with SDG&E, water officials, HHSA representatives and many other guests as they designated SDG&E as an official Live Well San Diego partner. The event took place on February 26th at the grand opening of their improved water-wise campus in Kearny Mesa. The re-designed campus is projected to save over 4 million gallons of water annually and also includes an outdoor fitness trail for their employees.
"Last year, Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency due to drought conditions and asked Californians to voluntarily double their water conservation efforts," said Michael Schneider, vice president of operations support and chief environmental office for SDG&E. "We took his call to action as an opportunity to not only do our part to conserve water, but to look at it as a chance to create a positive, sustainable change on our campus as a visible leader in our community."
The project is an example of what the Live Well San Diego initiative looks like in the business sector by promoting a healthy, safe, and thriving workforce as well as a commitment to conduct their operations in a way that preserves precious natural resources.
"This new fitness trail promotes outdoor physical activity, which is a key part of the Live Well San Diego initiative," said San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Horn. "SDG&E has partnered with the County of San Diego on many successful programs including our annual Cool Zones and disaster preparedness. This Live Well San Diego partnership is one more example of great teamwork."
SDG&E has a number of additional priorities that support the Live Well San Diego partnership, including a commitment to employee health (they are a Love Your Heart site), emergency preparedness (created and implemented a Community Fire Safety Program), and an investment in the community, with over $6 million in funds going to non-profit organizations in 2013.
