San Diego North Chamber of Commerce: Helping the Business Community Make Workplaces Healthy and Safe

The County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services North County Regions became a member of the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce (SDNCC) in January 2012 to become better aligned with the business community. SDNCC, which has more than 800 members, is a resource in this community on healthcare issues and it provides practical tools on its worksite wellness website. This collaboration has facilitated the sharing of expertise, leveraging resources and making valuable connections to engage businesses as partners in the health and wellbeing of our communities.  The SDNCC Health Committee serves as a source of information for the business community on healthcare issues, pertinent health legislation and its impact on the business community, and tools and resources through their Workplace Wellness website. In addition, the Chamber is committed to working with local businesses to reduce worksite injuries in support of a more productive workforce and healthier business climate.

In early 2013, the SDNCC and multiple organizations including the County of San Diego HHSA County Regions partnered to host Weight of the Workplace: Promoting a Healthy Bottom Line, at AMN Healthcare. The forum provided education to the business community on the facts surrounding workplace wellness and offered resources for employers and employees to use in incorporating wellness into their workplace. Attendees had the chance to visit health and wellness resource tables, view a portion of the HBO documentary “How Wellness Programs Can Help the American Workforce”, and hear a panel discussion from Dr. Wilma Wooten, County of San Diego Public Health Officer, Dr. E. John Rott, Kaiser Permanente Physician Director, Dr. Linda Richardson, North Inland Mental Health Center/Mental Health Systems, and Dr. Sheila Patel, Chopra Center for Wellbeing Medical Director. Breakout sessions, led by recognized industry experts, provided attendees with an opportunity to delve further into workplace wellness solutions.
