Recovery Happens Resource Fair on September 6

Do you know someone in recovery?  Join us for a day of celebration to recognize their challenge and fortitude.  Discover the broad range of resources and programs available to help them on their journey.

The County of San Diego will host its annual “Recovery Happens Resource Fair” on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Presidents Way in Balboa Park from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  This free event celebrates the success of community members in recovery and provides recovery and mental health resources. Since substance abuse and addiction often occur in conjunction with mental health issues, the Recovery Happens event will feature approximately 50 resource booths for substance abuse recovery and mental health services in San Diego County.

Nearly 14,000 people in San Diego County seek treatment for alcohol and other drug addictions each year.  This represents about ten percent of the population who may need treatment for addiction but don’t get it.

“Raising awareness about addiction is a very important strategy for prevention,” said Alfredo Aguirre, Alcohol and Drug Administrator for the County’s Health and Human Services Agency. “The upcoming celebration in Balboa Park is a great opportunity to raise awareness and provide resources to people in need.”

The drugs that have seen the most rapid increase in addiction are prescription drugs.

Nearly one in five local high school students report misuse of prescription medication, according to the California Healthy Kids Survey. Young adults report thinking that prescription drugs are “safer” to use than street drugs.  But what they don’t realize is that the most dangerous aspect of any drug is addiction.  Frequently, those addicted to prescription drugs may begin using street drugs when they can no longer access prescribed medications. Statistics also show increased use of heroin, believed to be driven in part by prescription drug abuse.

This year’s Recovery Happens celebration will feature speakers, music, games, face painting, a Recovery Countdown, an art exhibit, free snacks and great resources. Exhibitors include the County’s Health and Human Services Agency, the Logan Heights Family Counseling Center, Rachel’s Women’s Center, San Diego Sober Living Association, The UCSD Bridge to Recovery, MHS Families Forward Wraparound, Home of Hope, Vista Hill Parent Care, The Way Back, Inc., and The Crossroads Foundation.

Bring your family and friends to this important community event that supports positive, healthy and safe choices.  This activity affirms the County’s Live Well San Diego initiative by supporting Drug Free Lives and advancing active, healthy living.
