Safety is a top priority for County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation. Understanding that warm weather can lead to an increase in heat-related illnesses like dehydration and sunstroke, our “boots on the ground” hit the trails every day to remind park users to drink plenty of water, to seek shade whenever possible, to minimize physical activity, and to visit nearby cool zones – where climate control keeps temperatures at safe and comfortable levels.

Cool Zones are air-conditioned structures, managed by the County or another local jurisdiction, that are free and open to the public. Nearly 120 have been mapped at locations throughout San Diego.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has three locations on the list including the Fallbrook Community Center, the Lakeside Community Center, and the Spring Valley Community Center. Visit their web pages for open hours and to learn more about indoor programs.

Another popular park location on hot days is the Waterfront Park – where interactive water fountains delight water babies of all ages from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays. Splash pads have also been installed at two south county locations including Eastview County Park and Hilton Head County Park.
