On November 7, 2015, South Region Health and Human Services Agency partnered with San Diego Master Gardeners and the Mosaic Community Garden to host a Garden Gathering for Kinship Families at the Mosaic Community Garden in Chula Vista. The event brought together 13 families who were able to reconnect and build closer relationships with families in similar circumstances. Attendees had the opportunity to participate as a family in gardening, and learn about the physical and emotional benefits of this activity.
Master Gardeners sponsored two garden beds for Kinship Families, which will provide them a tranquil gathering space and a positive outlet for their entire family to have healthy food options and participate in physical activity. In response to the request from families, Mosaic Community Garden and Master Gardeners will also be hosting occasional trainings on seasonal planting, horticultural therapy, composting, and other gardening topics that families are interested in. The event was the first of its kind, and due to the positive response from families, it will certainly not be the last.
