2016 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Day – Improving Heart Health, Saving Lives

The American Heart Association National Go Red For Women Day was held on February 5, 2016 to raise awareness of the fight against the number one killer in women: heart disease. One in three women die of heart disease and stroke each year, yet it’s 80 percent preventable. Go Red For Women Day is a special day to wear red and bring attention to this staggering fact and inspire women to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities, and shape policies to save lives.

The 2016 San Diego Go Red For Women campaign kicked off February 4 when the UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center was illuminated red at the annual lighting ceremony.  This was one of over 20 San Diego landmarks and businesses that supported the campaign by going red in February. Local landmarks included the Hard Rock Hotel, Marriott Marquis, US Grant, and Hotel Del Coronado.

February’s Go Red For Women push concludes with the Go Red For Women Luncheon on March 4, 2016 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The luncheon is the celebratory event for the Go Red campaign and focuses on three areas to support the fight against heart disease in women: heightening awareness of the issue, creating a passionate call-to-action, and generating funds to support education and research.

Since the Go Red For Women movement was launched, 90% of women have made at least one lifestyle change and more than 700,000 women have been saved from heart disease – yet there is still much to do. To learn how you can join the fight against heart disease, click here.
