Expanded Indicators Measure Primary Caregiver/Caretaker

Demand for in-home care workers has been on the rise in the United States and is predicted to expand rapidly. This growth has been fueled, in part, by public policies established to help persons who are elderly, or who have chronic illnesses or disabilities, continue to live within their own homes. The Live Well San Diego Expanded Indicator Primary Caregiver/Caretaker measures the percent of population who are primary caregiver/caretakers.

Women tend to be primary caregivers for those in need and the physical and emotional demands of caregiving can have an immense impact on health and wellness. Overall, female caregivers experience greater emotional stress compared to male caregivers and are at risk for high levels of frustration, anxiety, depression, and self-neglect.

Establishing a support system through family members, friends, faith-based organizations, and caregiver support groups can help reduce mental and physical stress and caregiving burn-out. Although caregiving can be challenging, it can also bring a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and purpose. It is important for caregivers to take care of themselves and not forget about their own mental and physical health.
