Live Well San Diego Top 10 Indicators - Cigarette Smoking, Exercise and Doctor Visits

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Poor diet, lack of physical activity and tobacco use are three behaviors that contribute to four chronic diseases - cancer, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, and lung disease - that cause over 50 percent of all deaths worldwide. These diseases and chronic conditions are among the most common, costly and preventable of all health problems.

The following Live Well San Diego Expanded Indicators help measure behaviors and risk factors that impact health:

  • Cigarette Smoking – measures the percent of population who smoked in the last 12 months
  • Exercise – measures the percent of population spending two or more hours exercising per week
  • Doctor Visits – Measures percent of population who visited the doctor six or more times in the last 12 months

The new year provides an opportunity to pause and reflect on what went well the past year and what can be improved upon. Although behavioral and lifestyle changes to improve personal health can be made at any time, many people choose the new year to set health improvement goals and challenge themselves to become healthier.

Cutting down on sugary drinks and drinking more water, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, eating more fruits and vegetables, and participating in employer sponsored wellness programs are simple actions that can improve overall health.

Preventive care is also essential for maintaining good health. When it comes to treating potential serious conditions, early diagnosis is key. Scheduling an annual physical exam, and if you smoke, talking to your doctor about quitting, are a good start to a healthier new year and beyond.
