Trail Essentials: 10 Items to Add to Your Daypack

Pack ahead so you can spend the day out and about in your favorite County park! This ranger-approved list of daypack items will help you take your outdoor experiences to the next level:

  1. Water bottle(s)
  2. Topographic map
  3. Compass
  4. Sunscreen and lip balm
  5. Whistle
  6. Snacks and energy drinks
  7. First aid kit
  8. Pocket knife
  9. ID
  10. Hiking poles/sticks

Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses, sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and to dress comfortably in layers. Depending on how far and how late you’re planning to travel, you might also want to pack a flashlight (with extra batteries), some waterproof matches, a portable water purification system (filter or chemical) and an emergency blanket.

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) maintains 124 parks, preserves and historic sites across 50,000 acres of park land. No matter where you’re located or how far you want to travel, we offer a ready escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

If you have questions about where to go or what to pack, visit www.sdparks.org, call the reservations hotline at 877-565-3600, or ask a ranger. DPR staff is on site seven days a week at many parks to protect local habitats and ensure you enjoy a rewarding experience outdoors.
