From national disasters to local fires, 2017 taught us that
emergencies can strike anywhere at a moment’s notice. As we move into
2018, the American Red Cross of San
Diego/Imperial Counties wants San Diegans to feel prepared for
any potential crisis.
Here’s how to be “Red Cross Ready” this year:
Be prepared.
-
Get a kit. The first step to preparedness is to create a kit
with the necessary supplies that you can use at home or take with
you during an evacuation. Be sure to include essentials such as
water, food, first-aid supplies, medications and a communication
device – click here to download a
printable checklist of what to include in your emergency kit.
-
Make a plan. Take time this year to meet with your loved ones
and determine how you will respond in an emergency. Establish where
you will meet and develop a communications plan with an out-of-area
point of contact.
-
Be informed. Know how local authorities will notify you
during a disaster and what you will use to receive necessary
information. Stay up-to-date by reviewing safety tips for disasters,
including home fires and earthquakes.
Get Connected.
-
Organize your community. It’s crucial to be in touch with
your network this year, both in person and online. Utilize social
media to stay connected during emergencies and download the Red Cross Emergency App to
have the information you need at your fingertips.
Take Action.
-
Take classes. The Red Cross offers a variety of programs and
courses you can take to help you get ready for an emergency. Whether
you become CPR certified or take fully online classes, make it a
priority to get the training that can help save a life.
-
Get involved. Make an impact this year by using your personal
expertise to become a Red Cross volunteer. There are a wide-range of
skills that are always in need. Consider applying today.
Don’t let fear of an emergency rule your year: be prepared, get
connected and take action to ensure wellness all year long. For more
