In August 2015, San Ysidro Health Center was awarded the Federal Health Services and Administration Resources New Access Point Grant to open a new clinic in National City. Construction is currently underway for the new site which will be called, South Bay Family Health and Dental Center. The clinic will be located at 330-340 E. 8th Street, National City, CA 91950. South Bay Family Health and Dental Center is designed to increase access to primary care services in National City and serve as a “healthcare home” for low income individuals and families. It will also help to alleviate the service demand from San Ysidro Health Center’s other National City-based medical clinics, Paradise Hills Family Clinic and National City Family Clinic, both of which are already operating at full capacity.
South Bay Family Health and Dental Center will target low income National City residents, but will be equipped to serve residents from other communities within San Ysidro Health Center’s service area. A large percentage of South Bay Family Health and Dental Center patients will have Medi-Cal health coverage, as well as uninsured patients. As a Federally Qualified Health Center site, South Bay Family Health and Dental Center’s services will be available to patients who need care, regardless of their ability to pay. San Ysidro Health Center’s Sliding Fee Program for uninsured patients is based on the current Federal Poverty Level Guidelines. Discount percentages (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%) are based on the patient's income up to the maximum of 200% Federal Poverty Level Guidelines and are based on verifiable household income and family size.
South Bay Family Health and Dental Center encompasses a 6,100 square foot facility. It will include separate medical and dental suites, administrative offices, 5 medical exam rooms, 1 triage room, and 6 dental operatory rooms. South Bay Family Health and Dental Center will house co-located medical and dental services for patients of all ages. Medical care will focus on general Family Medicine services. South Bay Family Health and Dental Center will include a laboratory for specimen collection and minor diagnostic services such as pregnancy testing, urinary tract infections, etc. Dental care will include general dentistry services, as well as specialty pediatric dental services. Patients will also have access to San Ysidro Health Center’s continuum of primary care, enabling health coverage enrollment and transportation assistance and health promotion such as health education services.
Accessibility is one of South Bay Family Health and Dental Center’s key features. The building is located 0.4 of a mile from the major San Diego freeway, Interstate 5, and 0.6 of a mile from the trolley and bus station located on 8th Street Transit Center. There are also four bus stops located within a two block radius of the clinic, the furthest less than 500 feet away. The center also includes a parking lot on the building’s south and west sides.
