The San Diego Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. (SDAC) has been a recognized organization in San Diego County since 1938. SDAC members continue their commitment to transforming under-served communities through service, leadership, and empowerment while also extending programs and public service initiatives within their Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement within the San Diego community.
In September, SDAC participated in the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer in NTC Park at Liberty Station. The chapter, which is a National Partner of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, raised over $700 to support the lifesaving mission of St. Jude.
SDAC hosted their Black History Essay Awards Program & Reception on March 25, 2017. Their essay contest encouraged students to write an essay about an African-American and their significant impact on American history. Over 300 countywide students submitted their essays. 1st-3rd place finishers in middle and high were honored with certificates and prize money. The award winners read their winning essays to the audience of family members, Delta Sigma Theta members, community leaders, teachers, etc. The 2nd place winner wrote and read his winning essay on The 54th Massachusetts Calvary, and the 3rd place winner wrote and read her essay on former First Lady Michelle Obama.
SDAC hosted its annual “Say Yes to the Dress: Prom Dress,” a prom dress giveaway for high school students. Young ladies were able to select complimentary gently used gowns and formal dresses as well snack on refreshments as they learned some easy makeup tips to prepare for the evening. The “Say Yes to the Dress: Prom Dress” giveaway served to aid in cutting prom costs for young ladies who may be facing financial hardship while also promoting morale, self-worth, confidence and self-esteem.
During the month of May, SDAC celebrated the importance of family by honoring mothers throughout San Diego County with their 28th Annual Breakfast for MiLady, “A Tribute to Mothers.” Over the years, SDAC has honored over three hundred women. This year, they honored twenty-three outstanding mothers in the San Diego Community.
