Arts-based programming helps military families reintegrate

Arts for Learning San Diego grew rapidly in 2016-2017, serving 76,794 students and families, 10,000 more than last year!

Arts for Learning San Diego served over 2,341 participants in 24 libraries and employed 32 teaching artists, delivering more than 8 programs throughout the County.  A4LSD offers programs in Visual Arts, Recycled Arts, Storytelling, Dance, Theatre, Puppetry, Cultural Arts and Music.  These programs consist of a 30-minute performance followed by 50 minutes of hands-on activities for the family.  Programs are based upon a book and support literacy goals as well as address topics on healthy eating, social studies and history, world culture and more.

A4LSD is dedicated to serving military students and families.  This past year, A4LSD worked with San Diego Unified School District and Coronado Unified School District to provide arts integration programming to Military Students.  They also partnered with Lincoln Military Housing to program Military Arts Connections (MAC) on bases and at military housing to provide family engagement activities that help families with reintegration and communication.  MAC engages military families through performance and interactive arts activities that encourage self-expression.
