In Home Supportive Services Public Authority Focuses on Employee Wellness

The IHSS Public Authority of San Diego has made a commitment to wellness for its employees and has incorporated it into their culture. IHSS formed a Wellness Committee, which has introduced monthly activities, such as introducing new fruits and stretches for the office. IHSS designated August as Heart Healthy Month, and the team held heart healthy potlucks and quizzes all month to encourage healthy choices.

IHSS also distributes a monthly newsletter focused on health. Leadership brought in guest speakers from the Parks & Recreation Department for All Staff meetings to talk about free and low cost activities around the county. They also invited a speaker from the San Diego County Credit Union to speak about Financial Wellness. IHSS Public Authority was represented by two teams in the County's Amazing Race in spring of 2017.

IHSS sees changes in healthy behavior among staff. More employees are self-monitoring food choices, using their break times to take walks and sharing other ideas they have about staying well. They also have an on-site gym, and staff are using it!
