San Diego Blood Bank Hosts First Annual Padres Summer Blood Drive

The San Diego Blood Bank serves hospitals in the San Diego, San Bernadino, Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and is the primary provider of blood to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Every year, more than 100,000 units of blood provided by the San Diego Blood Bank are transfused into patients of all ages, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds throughout San Diego County.  These patients are struggling with life threatening medical conditions including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more. The San Diego Blood Bank is also the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) designated Southern California Regional Operations Center for the distribution of blood to Southern California in the event of a major disaster or act of terrorism in the State of California.

From 7/1/16 to 6/30/17, the San Diego Blood Bank collected 42,000 pints of blood products on our 10 bloodmobiles. They collected 58,200 pints at 6 donor centers (locations include Carmel Valley, El Cajon, Escondido, Vista, Sabre Springs and our Gateway Center headquarters located minutes from downtown.)

In total, the San Diego Blood Bank collected approximately 100,200 pints of lifesaving blood products, including red cells,  platelets and plasma for hospital patients in need in our community.

Since each pint can save up to three lives, the blood collected from volunteer blood donors at the San Diego Blood Bank over the last fiscal year,  resulted in over 300,600 lives saved.

More blood is always needed. Read about the 1st Annual Padres Blood Drive here:
