The Kim Center for Social Balance is fast-tracking workplace gender equity as a means to increase economic and social prosperity and aims to transform San Diego County into a model of progress by 2020. Established in 2016, the Center has already made great strides with its Gender Equity Collaborative.

Thanks to support from the County and the community, the Center has launched a new member feature of the Gender Equity Portal. Now users can educate themselves on workplace gender equity matters, save their favorite resources, review resources and suggest their own, and communicate with other members of the Portal community.

In July of 2018, the Center will complete an informal focus group to create a snapshot of San Diego’s local workplace culture through the gender lens. Thirty San Diego Professionals in the for-profit sector will participate in the interviews. The project will help to launch a larger Workplace Gender Equity Report project conducted in partnership with the University of San Diego (USD) Center for Women’s Leadership. This County-wide study will aggregate the truly local data San Diego needs to tailor a structured action plan to its unique needs and populations.

Staff members were invited to participate in several community events, including the Annual Symposium Homeless Panel of the Commission on the Status of Women and City of San Diego Councilmember Barbara Bry’s Workplace Equity Initiative. The Center has also participated in the City of San Diego’s Nonprofit Academy at USD; given public comments to city councilmembers in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, National City, San Diego, and Oceanside; and contributed a commentary to the San Diego Business Journal.
