Get Fit on National Walking Day on April 6

Americans are spending more time than ever sitting in front of computer screens  – which means less time being active. That’s why the American Heart Association, a recognized Live Well San Diego partner, has designated the first Wednesday of April (April 6, 2016) as National Walking Day. The goal is to get moving for a healthier heart. In San Diego, the American Heart Association, a recognized Live Well San Diego partner, along with San Diego MyHeart.MyLife sponsor Union Bank, will host a lunchtime celebration featuring a heart healthy walk and health expo. This year’s National Walking Day celebration will be at the County of San Diego Administrative Building Waterfront Park.

Participants will enjoy health screenings, Subway sandwiches, cool booths, and fun giveaways. But most importantly, they will take those first steps toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Studies have shown that physically inactive people can double their risk for heart disease. On National Walking Day, the County and its partners urge everyone to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity weekly for adults.

Participating in National Walking Day is as simple as lacing up your sneakers and taking a walk. Start a healthy habit and take a 30 minute walking break April 6. Invite your friends to join you and you'll see how easy it is to make physical activity part of your day.

Participants are encouraged to post a picture of themselves in action with the hashtag #SDWalkDay on social media accounts.
