County Expands Replanting Efforts For the Love of Trees

The County of San Diego loves trees. They love them SO much, they’ve made a long-term commitment to replant trees 3:1 where possible, and as resources become available.

In January, the County Board of Supervisors approved a $2M expansion of the Department of Parks and Recreation's Comprehensive Tree Program. Funds will be used to purchase 3,500 new trees of different sizes and types – and will help pay for the removal of large trees that are dead or dying, due to drought and invasive species.

The program aligns with the County’s mission to balance opportunities for recreation with preservation and sustainability, while promoting park safety and improving park experiences via a healthier, more diverse tree canopy.

Environmental Benefits: Trees conserve water and replenish underground water reserves. They stabilize roots to prevent erosion, protecting trails and other park features. They also host full ecosystems of animals and insects, providing food, shelter and sustenance for their extended habitats.

Economic Benefits: Trees planted near homes provide natural wind and sun barriers, which can reduce heating and air-conditioning costs. Mature trees elevate property value and can also reduce medical costs by boosting physical wellness.

Social Benefits: Trees filter the sun’s ultra-violet rays, provide shade and comfort, and cool the atmosphere. They also filter rainfall, pollutants and sound – muting distractions that would otherwise interfere with parties, picnics and camping trips.

Broadcast your own love for trees by joining our growing list of volunteer tree planters, or by planning a trip to a County Park where you can view our Comprehensive Tree Program in action.
