For more than two decades, pediatric dentist Dr. Nazli Keri and orthodontist Dr. Kami Hoss have done a “super” job of meeting the oral health needs of children in San Diego County. Healthy oral hygiene habits positively influence an individual’s overall physical, heart and mental health.
The Super Dentists continue to grow and address the link between dental health and whole body health within the San Diego County community. “Many studies show that kids that take care of their teeth, and families that do so together, are more confident and showcase high levels of self-esteem,” explains Juliet Woodall, Service Referral Coordinator for The Super Dentists. “When your teeth look good, you feel good, and you want to be around people and speak in front of people.”
The Super Dentists are committed to serving their community. “We are always looking for ways to be involved and want to give back as much as possible,” said Woodall. “We are trying to reach every child not just as a business, but as a community resource. We want to change lives and we want our clients to know that we are here.”
In addition to the unique experience provided by The Super Dentists, they also educate youth and train the next generation of professional caregivers through their own dental assisting school. The Super Dentists have a location at Junior Achievement of San Diego’s JA BizTown, and they participate in Classics4Kids music education, CPR and Mommy & Me classes. In 2017-18, the JA BizTown program taught 18,170 students from 40 School Districts how to be a citizen, how an economy works, and how to apply for a job and run a successful business.
The various superheroes at The Super Dentists include the “Tooth Keri,” acted out by Dr Nazli Keri and “Dr. Have One Super Smile,” played by Dr. Kami Hoss. The “Tooth Keri” performs dental presentations to over 1,000 schools each year to teach kids the importance of taking care of their teeth. The team also includes “Melo-D,” who greets pediatric clients when they arrive at the clinic. She sings and plays games with the kids in order to help warm them up to the clinic and ensures that they feel safe, happy and comfortable to be there. “We have our superheroes tell an amazing story so that the kids have something to relate to and they come there every time knowing what to expect,” shared Woodall.
The Super Dentists also reach out to schools in the community in celebration of National Dental Health Month. Teams visit schools and Head Start sites to offer free dental check-ups, services and information. In February, they visited 55 different locations and provided 93 presentations all over the county to help raise awareness for oral hygiene and share the importance of taking care of one’s oral health with students.
