SANDAG ALERT: Bike to Work Day rescheduled to May 30
In light of the disruptions caused by the wildfires, the SANDAG iCommute program has decided to postpone the Friday, May 16 Bike to Work Day event countywide to Friday, May 30.
At this time, the County's primary concern is the health and safety of riders, the public, and emergency response personnel. The fires have affected air quality countywide, making physical exertion inadvisable in areas where there is still smoke in the air. The lives of thousands of residents have been disrupted.

Worksite wellness goes beyond the office. How you get to and from work matters to your health.
May is Bike to Work Month in San Diego County, the month where employees are encouraged to ride their bicycles to work as a way to stay healthy, save money, and take less of a toll on the environment. The highlight of the month is the nationally recognized Bike to Work Day – Friday, May 30.
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the San Diego Area Transportation Partners, through the iCommute program, make it even easier for county residents to ride their bicycles. By registering for Bike to Work Day, you receive information on more than 90 “pit stops” throughout the county that offer free t-shirts, snacks and refreshments.
You can also log your bike trips throughout the month using the TripTracker, and be entered into weekly prize drawings through Bike to Work month. The Bike to Work month corporate challenge allows companies to compete for the highest number of bicycle riders during May.
While May is Bike to Work month, San Diego County offers the ideal climate to bike to work all year long. The region is becoming increasingly bike-friendly, with citizen-led bicycle advocacy groups and local government agencies working to make the area even more bike-friendly.
The ongoing Bikes Count project is a partnership between the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency, the Active Transportation Research program at San Diego State University and SANDAG in the installation of more than 50 automated bicycle counters throughout the county. These counters tally the number of bicyclists that use certain routes to travel to work, home and school, and help regional planners understand where bicycle facilities - such as bike lanes - are most needed. The project is made possible by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Another great tool for bicyclists is the San Diego Regional Bike Map.
More than 8,400 people bicycled to work in the San Diego region last May, logging more than 216,000 bicycle commute miles. Employers throughout the county helped in these efforts, encouraging employees to bike to work, joining the effort to help keep employees healthy. Companies with healthy employees enjoy a healthier bottom line.
