The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, in partnership with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, was selected to receive a grant for new children’s books to promote reading and learning. Over 3000 books will be distributed through the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack program.

Through the Food 4 Kids program, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank works with 41 schools in 12 school districts throughout San Diego County to reach 1,974 students living in poverty with a backpack full of food each Friday so they will not face hunger at home over the weekend.  During the month of April, participating schools received a box of books accompanying their food bags.  Students enrolled in Food 4 Kids were given a brand new book to help them launch into learning.

“Our students were really surprised and excited to receive a brand new book along with their Friday backpack of food. The smiles on their faces showed the appreciation,” said Murissa Miller, a speech therapist at Del Rio Elementary School. 

The book donation was from The Molina Foundation as part of its Launch into Learning national literacy campaign, in collaboration with Community Action Agencies across the United States.

“We feel extremely honored and very much appreciate this gift,” said Maggie Ramsberger, Program Director of the County of San Diego Community Action Partnership. “We care about supporting the success of children and families who we serve. Literacy is the key to progress for our community.”
