San Diego City College Recognized as First Higher Education Institution Live Well Partner

San Diego City College was recognized as an official Live Well San Diego partner on November 7, 2013 for its leadership role in promoting healthy lifestyles to the college’s students, faculty, and staff.  City College is the Live Well San Diego initiative’s first recognized college/university.

The designation was made official when San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts declared City College a Live Well San Diego partner at the San Diego Community College District’s (SDCCD) Board of Trustees meeting.  The board approved and adopted the designating resolution on December 7, 2013.

“The County adopted Live Well San Diego to encourage San Diegans to make small changes in their habits and lifestyle that will result in big improvements in their health and quality of life,” said Rich Grosch, President of SDCCD’s Board of Trustees. “City College answered the call with a campaign that promotes healthy lifestyles to students, faculty, and staff.”

City College’s “Step up to Live Well” campaign includes a fitness map for a one-mile walking course incorporating the college’s many sets of stairs, healthy cafeteria menu options, nutrition education seminars, and behavioral and mental health education events.   The campaign will be promoted throughout the City College Centennial Celebration, marking the college’s 100th anniversary in 2014.

San Diego City College officially launched the “Step Up to Live Well” campaign during its 7th Annual Fitness Awareness Week on November 14, 2013, with more than 200 students and staff joining a campus-wide 2k fun run/walk.

City College’s Interim President, Dr. Lynn Neault, said the Live Well San Diego partnership is a natural fit for the community college.

“Part of City College’s mission is to be an agent of change in the communities we serve,” said Neault. “Promoting healthy behaviors is now integrated at all levels of City College, from our highly regarded nursing program, to our campus-wide Health and Wellness Fair, to our innovative urban gardens and farm-to-table programs.”

“When you look at the exciting programs City College has developed in support of health and wellness for students, it’s clear they share our goals with Live Well San Diego,” said County Supervisor Ron Roberts. “We are looking forward to working closely with City College to not only improve the health and safety of students, but residents throughout the county.”

As the second-largest of California’s 72 community college districts, the San Diego Community College District serves approximately 130,000 students annually through three two-year colleges and seven Continuing Education campuses.
