On November 19, 2015, Circulate San Diego released the results of the 2015 Regional Walk Scorecard at a press event at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center. National City came out with the highest score this year, followed by Solana Beach and Encinitas.
By looking at a variety of factors, the San Diego Regional Walk Scorecard rates the work each of the 18 cities is doing to respond to the need for better and safer walking conditions. Factors include but are not limited to each city’s pedestrian fatality rate, infrastructure improvements completed to improve walkability, the existence of policies that support walking, and walkability ratings crowdsourced by San Diego County residents using a phone app developed by Circulate. This is the third year that the Scorecard results have been published, since the first report in 2012.
Although National City has the highest pedestrian collision rate in the region, the city, for the second time now, has garnered the highest score by consistently taking steps to improve safety. For example, National City continues efforts to add pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, especially near schools and civic buildings. In addition, the city uses a comprehensive plan to make improvements that includes educating students and families on safe walkability. As a recognized Live Well San Diego partner, National City is a model for other cities in the region.
Circulate San Diego’s Regional Walk Scorecard measures what cities are doing to improve walkability. In addition to raising awareness of the actions that can improve walkability, the Scorecard can result in healthy competition between cities in the San Diego Region, to champion the policies and projects that promote walk-friendly communities.
