Joining other communities in the State and across the nation, San
Diego County hosted its tenth annual “Recovery Happens” celebration in
honor of National Recovery Month on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in
Balboa Park. This free outreach event celebrated the success of
community members in recovery and included more than 50 booths
providing information about behavioral health resources in San Diego
County.
Event features included the presentation of a
Proclamation by County Supervisor Dave Roberts, an American Indian
healing drum circle by “Mending Feathers,” and a Recovery countdown.
Also featured were an art exhibit and free interactive activities,
including a clay booth, face painting, games, a photo booth, live
dance instructors, and free snacks donated by various community
organizations. It was a fabulous day of hugs, high fives and the
recognition that a life free from addiction leads to many good
things. Events such as these support Live Well San Diego by
promoting healthy, safe and drug-free communities.
The Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the US Department of
Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance
behavioral health nationwide. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the
impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s
communities.
As of September 19, 2014, SAMHSA reported
68 proclamations had been issued for Recovery Month nationwide,
including one by President Barrack Obama. Included in this count was
the proclamation presented by Supervisor Dave Roberts on behalf of
Chairwoman Dianne Jacob and the County of San Diego Board of
Supervisors declaring September to be National Recovery Month in San
Diego.
The Presidential Proclamation highlights that
“during the 25th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery
month, we celebrate those who are seeking treatment and those who have
found pathways to healthy, rewarding lives, and we stand with the
families, friends, and professionals who support them.”
Press and media attended the San Diego County Recovery event, and
produced the news coverage.
