AKA Head Start joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on February 20, 2020. AKA Head Start is dedicated to closing the achievement gap by providing quality school readiness and comprehensive services for children and families in East San Diego County.
AKA Head Start first began in 1971 and was initially known as the Encanto Head Start Program. The program provided day services to 80 children and their families in the Encanto community. Dr. Geneva Roberts looked at the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority to becoming the sponsor for the Encanto Head Start Program, and the name was officially changed to AKA Head Start.
The organization provides comprehensive services for children ages 3-5. Services for children in this age gap are to ensure they are healthy and ready for kindergarten. Education curriculum in this program is individualized to promote school readiness and aligns with California Preschool Learning Foundations. Comprehensive services are also offered for children ages 0-3. These services are to provide safe and developmentally enriching caregiving, which promotes the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, and prepares them for future growth and development.
AKA Head Start is committed to advancing the Live Well San Diego vision by empowering and improving the lives of San Diego residents so they can live a happy, healthy, and meaningful life.
