Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on July 10th, 2015. Now celebrating its 74th birthday, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has a distinguished history as a youth non-profit organization in San Diego County. The agency specifically targets underprivileged and at-risk youth with a wide variety of enrichment programs, activities and services centered on academic success, character development and healthy lifestyles. From its humble beginnings in Logan Heights in 1941, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has grown to include twelve Clubs, a teen center, and four school satellite sites. They serve more than 22,000 youth each year through after-school programs and summer day camps.
As part of their Healthy Lifestyles initiative, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego’s PLANET HEALTH engages young people ages 6-13 from diverse, low-income backgrounds in a variety of fun, hands-on educational activities designed to build long-term well-being. Children learn the importance of nutritional eating, regular physical activity, and making positive lifestyle choices to grow up to be healthy and happy adults.
Boys & Girls Clubs also offer youth a chance to participate in a number of sports leagues, as well as our Summer Games, an annual multi-sports competition that engages 1,300+ young people in Olympic-style sports.
Additionally, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego support programs that encourage young people to make positive choices. These programs include the BE a H.E.R.O. (Help, Encourage, Respect, Others) and SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) programs. Be a H.E.R.O. aims to reduce and eliminate instances of bullying and harassment through a series of research-developed bullying prevention lessons. The SMART Moves program is a field-tested Health & Life Skills program to help young people develop skills to resist alcohol, tobacco, other drug use and premature sexual activity. Together with other Live Well San Diego partners, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego is working towards achieving healthy, safe, and thriving communities.
