Barrio Logan College Institute

Barrio Logan College Institute joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on October 24, 2017. BLCI was founded in 1996 in response to showing that at-risk students dropped out of high school at alarming high rates, were underrepresented in higher education, and higher paying careers. BLCI serves as a vital prevention strategy in the education arena, seeking to reverse the challenges faced by low-income, first generation college students. Our approach is to work urgently and creatively in eliminating obstacles our students face. For example, in our community of Barrio Logan, the average counselor caseload at our two primary feeder high schools is 393 students per counselor. By contrast, BLCI's maximum student to staff ratio is 20 to 1 at any given time. Our one-on-one tutoring model is even more personalized. This in turn allows us to ensure we maintain our 100% success rate of sending our high school graduates to college and retaining 90% of them in college.

BLCI continues with its mission to transform the lives of underserved youth through the ABCs: Academic Support, Behavioral Development, and College Knowledge. To date, BLCI celebrates 100% college enrollment, 147 and counting graduates, and 49 graduated from college. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college through after school programs that begin in third grade. Our after-school enrichment program is a pipeline that begins in the third grade and continues through post college graduation. We believe all students should have the option to go to college. Education provides individuals with the knowledge, opportunities, and skills to become full and active participants in society. Thus resulting in a thriving community and a better world.

BLCI aligns with Live Well San Diego by:

•      Working with local schools, educational nonprofits, public agencies, businesses, philanthropy, and other community leaders who have developed programs for social change,

•      Participating in collaborative efforts and educational opportunities with the programs broader network.

The organization’s focus on the opportunity to collaborate with the network of Live Well San Diego champions and partners to achieve the greatest collective impact possible for creating and sustaining safe, healthy and thriving communities.
