The Braille Institute of America joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on December 14, 2016. Founded in 1919, the Braille Institute of America is a non-profit organization providing free programs, seminars and one-on-one instruction for visually impaired community members in San Diego County. They have six regional centers and more than 200 outreach locations throughout Southern California and offer personal connections in the home for qualified individuals. The Braille Institute was established to promote education and independence for persons that are blind or visually impaired and to support family members adapting to the changing needs of their loved ones.
Each year Braille Institute serves more than 75,000 people, including adults with age related eye conditions, such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Cataracts, as well as children and youth. They provide an environment of hope and encouragement through integrated educational, social and recreational programs. The organization offers instruction in adaptive healthy cooking, home skills, exercise, mobility training and staying connected through the latest in technology. Their adult programs feature lifestyle classes and activities to help adults with little to no vision build practical skills and gain or regain independence. They also have an annual Eyes Disease and Technology Fair every April presenting on the latest in vision research and new developments in technology.
The Braille Institute is committed to the advancement of the Live Well San Diego vision and will continue to help visually impaired residents and their loved ones adapt to life with low vision and achieve fulfilling, independent lives.
