Cardiff School District (CSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on March 13, 2014, after a vote by its Board of Trustees on January 14. CSD became a Live Well San Diego partner because of its commitment to provide a comprehensive health and wellness program for students, staff and families that encourages multiple forms of physical activities, nutrition education and environmental stewardship practices. CSD promotes good nutrition and healthy eating habits for their students through their school garden program which provides fresh, organic produce for the lunch program at both school sites while also providing outdoor educational opportunities for students to learn about science and nutrition. CSD also provides salad bars at both school sites and has replaced high-sugar drinks in the lunch program with the option of fresh drinking water. CSD recognizes the importance of reducing waste and has introduced a standardized lunchtime waste management protocol which has students separating waste into recyclable materials and food scraps into composting bins. In order to increase physical activity opportunities and ensure the safety of their students, CSD is collaborating with the City of Encinitas, another Live Well San Diego partner, to provide safe routes to school and also promote regular walk and bike to school programs. Moving forward, CSD is committed to continuing many of its successful programs to support students and families.
