The Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on January 21, 2016. CUSD’s Strategic Plan is closely aligned with Live Well San Diego’s vision, encouraging healthy lifestyles and a safe environment for their students, staff, and families.
CUSD provides a comprehensive learning environment that supports wellness, healthy eating, nutrition education, and physical education and activity. To promote school wellness, CUSD formed a Wellness Committee comprised of parents, staff and community stakeholders to support the District in promoting the health and wellness of its students and families. Students within the District receive many opportunities for physical activity, before, during, and after school through Mileage Clubs, In Motion Programs, an annual mini March Madness fifth grade basketball tournament, and an annual jog-a-thon.
In early 2015, CUSD was awarded the Bronze level of achievement in the Healthier US School Challenge, a 4-year certification recognizing the healthy meals served in schools, as well as the notable levels of nutrition and physical education, and physical activity provided to all K-5 students. In an effort to promote civic awareness and positive peer relations, CUSD schools participate in the “Pasta for Pennies” fundraiser to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and students are encouraged to participate in leadership and peer to peer activities. The District’s schools also implement character education programs and assemblies, and reinforce these efforts through events such as Peace Week and The Great Kindness Challenge.
Moving forward, CUSD is committed to continuing its successful programs that support students, families, and staff and contribute towards a healthy, safe, and thriving community.
