Imperial Beach joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on November 6, 2013. Imperial Beach became a Live Well partner by demonstrating a strong commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens by supporting both biking and walking—serving as the home of the Bayshore Bikeway and participating in the Safe Routes to Schools Coalition to improve walkability, particularly around schools. WalkSanDiego recently ranked Imperial Beach the 3rd most “walkable” city in the San Diego Region. Imperial Beach also recently received a Complete Communities award from Move San Diego for the Imperial Beach Bikeway Village, which will provide respite for cyclists making their way to and from Coronado on the Bayshore Bikeway. Imperial Beach has a created a healthier environment through these infrastructure improvements, and also supports access to fresh fruits and vegetables by hosting a farmers market on the Imperial Beach pier. Imperial Beach distinguishes itself by recognizing the importance of protecting its natural resources to not only create a healthier, safer community for its citizens but also benefitting economically by encouraging ecotourism and the unique character of the community.
