McAlister Institute joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on July 8, 2018. Founded in 1977, with the goal of providing affordable, highly effective treatment and recovery programs for individuals struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Today, as one of San Diego County’s largest substance abuse treatment providers, McAlister Institute’s proven and innovative services represent a continuum of care spanning prevention, outreach, intervention, education, outpatient treatment, residential treatment, and sober living.
In total, McAlister Institute’s 26 programs located throughout San Diego County serve more than 9,200 unduplicated adults, teens, and families annually, most of whom are low-income, under-served, indigent, and precariously housed or homeless. This significant number is due in part to the agency’s long-standing policy that no individuals be turned away based on the complexity of their needs or an inability to pay. Many of those served by McAlister Institute previously lacked access to care and needed supports. For years, they had “fallen through the cracks.”
McAlister Institute’s mission is to provide professional behavioral healthcare services that heal the lives of individuals and families, improving the quality of life in communities through recovery from substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. McAlister Institute’s commitment to the future and vision for creating the most effective services have long placed McAlister Institute in the role of being a leader of change, going above and beyond in meeting the wellness needs of clients.
McAlister Institute continues to pioneer substance abuse disorder (SUD) treatment innovations based on the needs of San Diegans struggling with addiction and has achieved success in advancing goals of Live Well San Diego in integrating Alcohol and Drug with Mental Health Services. The agency is engaged with a myriad of partnerships to support drug-free lives, offer coordinated care, and improve the quality of services provided to the most vulnerable populations, assuring services are accessible, high quality and cost-efficient. All McAlister Institute programs provide evidence-based, culturally competent, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed services that are carefully designed to overcome the complex barriers that had previously prevented our clients from thriving.
