The MiraCosta Community College District joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on May 28, 2014, following a vote by its Board of Trustees. MiraCosta College became a Live Well San Diego partner because of its strong commitment to offering programs, services and supporting environments that improve the physical, mental and emotional health of students and staff at its San Elijo and Oceanside campuses and at the Community Learning Center. For example, in order to increase physical activity among students, MiraCosta College offers many physical activity courses and provides an extensive intramural program. Through the Student Health Services Program, students also receive assistance with their physical, mental and emotional needs, which helps them achieve and maintain total health and academic success. Other health-based services include the Doggie De-Stress Program at the San Elijo Campus. Offered in partnership with the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the program brings pet assisted therapy dogs to campus to help calm the nerves and ease stress of students during final exam week. MiraCosta College is also committed to ensuring that students are prepared to work with and care for the growing aging population through its revised Gerontology Studies Program, which covers age-related physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development and changes during older adulthood. The college’s commitment to employee health is also evident through its Wellness Program, in which employees receive education to support healthy lifestyle choices and are encouraged to take a proactive approach to their health. Furthermore, the college provides students and staff with a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free workplace and campus environment. Moving forward, MiraCosta College is committed to continuing its successful programs that support students and staff, and looks forward to partnering with other organizations in this endeavor.
