San Diego County Farm Bureau joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on September 1, 2016. Since 1914, the mission of the San Diego County Farm Bureau is to represent San Diego agriculture through public relations, education and public policy advocacy in order to promote the economic viability of agriculture balanced with appropriate management of natural resources.
The San Diego County Farm Bureau encourages the sustainability of the local farm industry while educating consumers about the importance of local agriculture. Through their educational programs, Friends of Farming and Ag in the Classroom, the San Diego County Farm Bureau is connecting consumers with local farmers through farm tours and providing agricultural curriculum for K-12 schools and grants to establish school gardens.
To further increase consumer knowledge and help make more informed choices, the San Diego County Farm Bureau developed and trademarked the “San Diego 365” label that growers can use to exclusively identify fruits and vegetables that have been grown in San Diego County. In order to make these fresh, local and nutritious foods accessible to all San Diego residents, the San Diego County Farm Bureau currently operates two certified farmers’ markets in City Heights and Linda Vista that accept both EBT and WIC food assistance dollars while also offering a Market Match incentive program.
The San Diego County Farm Bureau provides local growers with information on regulatory compliance, stormwater runoff education, labor rules, farmworker field and safety trainings, and invasive pests and diseases. They have also been instrumental in helping to craft and support the adoption of farm friendly policies in cities throughout San Diego County that encourage and incentivize the development of farms in urban neighborhoods.
Moving forward, the San Diego County Farm Bureau is fully committed to the Live Well San Diego vision and will continue its successful programs that contribute towards a healthy, safe, and thriving community.
