The San Diego National Association of Hispanic Nurses (SDNAHN) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on October 6, 2018. SDNAHN supports Live Well San Diego vision of creating safe, healthy and thriving communities by addressing health issues, educating communities and providing Hispanic nurses and nurses of all races, creeds, and cultures the opportunity to advocate for quality healthcare.
SDNAHN’s mission is to provide Hispanic/Latino(a)/Chicano(a) nurses and all other SDNAHN nurse members with the opportunity to address specific health issues related to the Hispanic/Latino culture and serve the healthcare and educational needs of the Hispanic community.
The San Diego National Association of Hispanic Nurses (SDNAHN) was organized in San Diego in August 1993 by Antonia ‘Tonie’ Brown, RN, M.A. and several other dedicated women. Since its inception, this organization has grown in numbers with a diverse membership and has been instrumental in supporting nursing students by awarding scholarships throughout the nursing career ladder.
SDNAHN is a branch of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses located in Washington DC founded in 1974 by Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, Dean Emeritus of State University of New York, Downstate, School of Nursing.
SDNAHN is committed to advancing Live Well San Diego into the future in the following ways:
· Providing collaborative forums, professional development opportunities and health advocacy to advance competent, safe and quality healthcare services to the Hispanic Community.
· Providing public health outreach, such as screenings and resources at local health fairs and events for at-risk and underserved communities.
· Assessing barriers in healthcare delivery and expanding educational opportunities.
· Distributing scholarships for nursing students of all degree levels, races, creeds, and cultures in San Diego County who are supportive of SDNAHN’s mission and demonstrate their work with underserved communities.
