Sweetwater Union High School District

The Sweetwater Union High School District was welcomed as a Live Well San Diego recognized partner on March 30, 2015.  The District was recognized for their commitment to provide safe, healthy and thriving school environments that promote student health and wellness. The District serves over 40,000 students in grades 7 through 12 as well as adult education classes on 32 campuses located in Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, and South San Diego, including the communities of San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Nestor.

The District offers health and social services for students, parents, families, and community members.  They have health clinics at two of their campuses and a mobile health clinic that serves two additional campuses, all of which provide health services to students and families in the area.  Additionally, the District has partnered with the Chula Vista Community Collaborative, National City Collaborative and other agencies to provide a variety of social services for students and their families.  This year, the District opened two community resource centers that serve the South San Diego and San Ysidro communities.

Sweetwater Union High School District is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Promise Neighborhoods.  Four of their schools participate in the Chula Vista Promise Neighborhood program.  This initiative is designed to support students from cradle to college by partnering with South Bay Community Services Academic Advocates and promotores in the community to provide academic, counseling, and health services to students living within the Promise Neighborhood catchment area.

Sweetwater Union High School District is committed to advancing the Live Well San Diego vision and is an active member of the Live Well San Diego South Region School Subcommittee.  s Health and Human Services Agency South Region and Scripps Medical Residency Program, the District is participating in the American Academy of Pediatrics TEAMS (Training, Education, Assistance, Mentorship, and Support) project to strengthen policies, practices, and infrastructure related to school health services.  The District is in the process of revising and updating their current Wellness Policy and initiating Wellness Committees at school sites.  In addition, the District expects funding through the Farm to School Grants Program to expand the farm projects initiated at many of the school sites throughout the district.
