Every year parents have the task of getting their children ready to return to school. In addition to providing the basic necessities of life here in San Diego, school supplies can be an added financial burden for parents.
Aimed at reducing that burden and helping children be prepared for school, Heaven’s Windows, the San Diego County Library Spring Valley, and County of San Diego Parks and Recreation hosted their 3rd annual “Back to School Jam 2016” on August 6, 2016 in Spring Valley. There were over 800 attendees at the event and 728 backpacks filled with school supplies distributed to the children, with the help of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department-Rancho San Diego Command. Children participated in crafts, face painting games, and enjoyed a fun Ronald McDonald magical story time. Youth from various community groups served as volunteers and several community resource partners hosted resource booths. Guests received free groceries, books, lunch, and various gifts. Heaven’s Windows also served free lunches to children through the Summer Food Service Program.
Through a collective effort from the community, the event was a great success and many families received information and resources to ensure their children have a positive start to the school year.
