American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society joined Live Well San Diego as a Recognized Partner on December 15, 2016. Since 1913, when the American Society for the Control of Cancer, later the American Cancer Society (ACS), was established, they have been dedicated to creating public awareness about cancer and focusing on research to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Their Global Headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia, and they have regional and local offices throughout the country to ensure they have a presence in every community. Their mission is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

The American Cancer Society helps people get well and stay well through preventive wellness programs, patient services and fund raising and advocacy for research and treatment of the disease. They offer programs and services to help people manage cancer treatment and recovery and find the emotional support they need. In 2016, they generously donated $11 million to fund cancer research efforts locally. The American Cancer Society utilizes volunteers to sign individuals up for the ACS Cancer Action Network where they can stay informed on public policy issues that affect cancer research, access to care and tobacco use.

The American Cancer Society demonstrates a commitment to the wellness of their employees by providing free gym access and bicycles to use while at work and offering health assessments and coaching tools for nutrition and healthy living through use of their Red Brick Wellness program. They support staff participation in the Live Well San Diego 5 K, Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to promote healthy behavior and support various non-profit groups in the community.

The American Cancer Society is committed to continuing to advance the Live Well San Diego vision by promoting healthy choices such as not smoking, staying at a healthy weight, eating right, getting recommended screening tests and remaining active as ways to reduce the risk of cancer. They will also continue to serve on the Aging & Independence Services Health Promotion Committee and support the Love Your Heart wellness campaign.
