Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego was welcomed as a Live Well San Diego recognized partner on June 18, 2015 at the Annual Catholic Charities Volunteer Recognition Event. Catholic Charities was founded in 1919 and serves both San Diego and Imperial Counties as a multi-service agency. As one of San Diego’s leading foundational human care service organizations, Catholic Charities operates over 30 programs in nine service areas that support and empower people in need.
The mission of Catholic Charities is to witness actively on behalf of the scriptural values of mercy and justice, to acknowledge the sacredness of the human person by working to enhance the quality of life of each individual, and to advocate for a just society by calling men and women to action on behalf of the poor.
Catholic Charities shares the values of Live Well San Diego, particularly by its promotion of healthy, safe, and thriving communities in San Diego County. Catholic Charities operates four food resource centers to address local food insecurity; provides education on Covered California; offers drug, alcohol and mental health recovery support groups; conducts workshops for senior residents about budgeting and personal security; and supports self-government through resident councils.
Catholic Charities promotes changes from within by encouraging staff to participate in various forms of healthy activities and events. Their Health and Wellness Committee promotes health contests and activities, holds an annual staff picnic with sports to foster camaraderie and boost morale, and, through interoffice email, communicates regularly with staff regarding health tips, mental health notes, and exercise ideas.
