Community Housing Works joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on December 7, 2017. Founded in 1988, CHW is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that develops, rehabilitates, preserves and operates affordable apartment communities in San Diego and throughout California. CHW’s unique approach extends beyond an affordable place to call home. In addition to providing working families and seniors with stable homes in healthy communities, CHW provides powerful programs, services and connections to resources. These tools help people attain financial stability, improve their health and overall well-being, and set school-age children up for success in the classroom and beyond.
CHW is committed to building a culture of health among residents. From resident led walking clubs and Zumba classes to healthy cooking workshops and free Farmers’ Markets, CHW Community Centers provide programs and resources that encourage healthy living. CHW also partners with local organizations to provide residents with life-changing programs, including the Diabetes Prevention Program and Project Dulce with Scripps Wittier Diabetes Institute.
With over 3,000 apartments statewide, CHW has the business systems and disciplines, capital strategy, community relationships and staffing necessary to build and preserve more affordable apartment homes and serve more San Diegans every year. Residents represent a broad range of families and individuals, including low-wage working families, seniors and individuals relying on supportive housing. While residents and their needs vary, a common thread is that they are living on low wages or fixed incomes. CHW’s ultimate impact is driven by what success means for residents: People actively achieving life-changing goals for themselves, their families and their communities. CHW is intentionally inclusive in serving the broad range of incomes, people and housing needs in all communities.
