The Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) joined Live Well San Diego as a recognized partner on January 12, 2016 following a vote by its Board of Education. OUSD became a Live Well San Diego partner by promoting the link between student health and learning by providing a comprehensive learning environment that supports wellness, healthy eating, nutrition education, and physical education and activity.
To promote school wellness, OUSD formed a Wellness Committee comprised of students and their families, staff and community stakeholders to support the district in promoting health and wellness. Through the efforts of the Wellness Committee, many school sites have thriving school gardens which provide outdoor educational opportunities as well as fresh, organic produce for the district’s lunch program.
To further promote healthy eating, OUSD’s Nutrition Services Department provides a healthy afternoon snack for elementary school students through the Afterschool Education and Safety program, a healthy supper for students at one elementary school through the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and a summer food program called “Summer Feeding.”
In an effort to reduce lunchtime waste, OUSD has partnered with the City of Oceanside’s Zero Waste program to have every student separate waste into recyclable materials and food scraps for onsite composting thereby reducing lunchtime waste by 80%.
To enhance the health and wellness of their employees, the district partners with Keenan, a provider of wellness consulting services, to analyze employee health metrics, identify complimentary program components, communicate wellness options, and host wellness fairs.
Moving forward, OUSD is committed to continuing its successful programs that support students, families, and staff and contribute towards a healthy, safe, and thriving community.
